Yesterday Unity announced native support for the Daydream platform. This is great news for developers for several reasons:
- It taps into the massive development community that Unity has. Any Unity developer is now by default also a Daydream developer. Unity already has a rich ecosystem of talented game devs, application devs and artists. I’m excited for the community to start exploring the endless possibilities of Daydream.
- The partnership between Unity and Daydream lowers the barrier to entry to VR for developers. It’s now as simple as switching on VR support and developers can easily build to a Daydream enabled phone. No messing around with prefabs or hacks, it’s now native. With Daydream coming to every new Android phone moving forward it will be the default VR platform.
- Unity has been the great democratizer 3D game development always with the developer community as their focus. Daydream is poised to do the same for virtual reality. Combined together Unity and Daydream opens up the experience of high end virtual reality to a whole new generation of users.
With the imminent release of Daydream (Fall 2016), now’s the time to start getting your app ready for launch. Read the press release over on the Unity blog and check out how easy it is to build for Daydream.
